Eleni's Design Canvas

After finalising both the blog and the website, it was time to evaluate my progress and work. We have worked on three different projects throughout this semester. We worked on sequential images, an advertisement poster and our major project which included a website. Referring to known product designers such as Marc Newson helped me get inspired and work hard for all my projects. I spent a lot of time, effort and thought to create the best outcome I could produce as I wanted my work to represent me well. I tried pushing myself to go out of my comfort zone and experiment and research as much as possible. In product design, the product you’re designing has to solve a specific problem. I tried to find a general theme that was a common problem and provide solutions on how to solve it. In my research, I always tried to look at various products and analyse them myself at first without looking at any other sources.  Before reflecting on my blog and website, I thought it was appropriate to include on more blog post with my thoughts on my design table. I am extremely happy with the end result. I brought my exact vision to life and I could not be prouder of the product I created. The designing on the software was not as complicated as I thought it would be, but I am mostly proud of the research I did to back up my work. I tried to break down all aspects of my design and create blog posts on all of them. I tried to look at different products in the market and get inspired by them. I also asked some of my friends for feedback which helped improve my design. I really like how minimalistic, simple yet very effective this design turned out to be. I managed to find suitable components that would keep the price of the product low for students to be able to afford it. My design boards were now finalised and it was time to place them into my portfolio page. I started by choosing the design of the gallery that I wanted to include. I clicked on gallery and then clicked on slider galleries as I wanted to display one board at a time. I chose this one as it is a landscape design and it is very aesthetically pleasing. I had to replace the existing images with my own ones. I had trouble uploading my images as they were in a PDF file. However, I managed to change them to PDF and upload them. Thankfully, the quality was not ruined and the size of the gallery fit my images perfectly. No text was cut out and everything was perfectly seen which I feel like adds a lot to the page layout. The other layouts I tried ended up cropping parts of the board out which did not look nice. I clicked on 'change image' and added my three design boards in the slide.  After finalising my project, it was time to review it to ensure that it fits all my criteria and specifications. I designed a table on PowerPoint and inserted a screenshot of it here. As seen from the table above, my design ticks all the boxes. I am very satisfied with the outcome and I really enjoyed creating it. It fits well with what I was trying to achieve and provides solution to students that struggle with space and financial ability.  I am really pleased that my table fits all the specifications and I would really like to manufacture this one day.

After creating my own product, it was time to receive some feedback. I will show many people the renders of my design and record their opinions. Feedback from target market ensures that I am on the right track if they are pleased with my end result. I asked the same 5 people throughout my user feedback to see if their opinions change as I develop my idea. Person #1: I really like that you took my feedback and made the shelves adjustable as anyone can rearrange them to their desired height. The desk looks spacious which is very beneficial for the user as they will have more room to study, dine and store. At first, I thought that the pneumatic hinges would be in the way of the user, however, they don't take up much space and they are not bulky. It's amazing to see the development of the product, from where it started all the way to the finished desk. The first step was to find a suitable layout for my design. I opened a new A4 slide on Photoshop and started creating layouts. The layout in the picture above was really odd as it didn't fit with my design. I wanted the background to be white in order to keep everything minimalistic and simple so the text can stand out. I wanted a touch of the orange colour as it is the colour used in my website. In my website, I have multiple squares and frames, so I decided to add an orange frame around the page to maintain the same colour scheme and theme.  DESIGN BOARD #1: I added the 'multi-purpose table' title, the subtitle of the page 'project summary' and a brief description of my product. I added my target market, problem and solution to give the client a better idea of what I'm trying to achieve and how.  After finalising my own design, it was time to render my product from different perspectives in order to start the process of my design boards. The rendering process was the most time-consuming and frustrating as I could not find a free rendering software that works well with sketchup. I ended up using Irender_nXt.  The first obstacle I encountered was that when I placed my white design in front of a white background, it looked grey. This would give the viewer the wrong impression of the correct colour of my design. Therefore, I had to switch the background colour to grey in order to create greater contrast. I created many renders as a means of having a lot to choose from in my design boards with many perspectives.  These were my final renders:   Although I think that the renders could be improved and better quality, I am satisfied with them. Time constraints was definitely an issue with my project as I did not have sufficient time to complete everything well....
