Primary research: Answers

Image
After forming my questionnaire, I sent it out to multiple people to respond to it. I was aiming to gather more than 20 responses in order to have a good amount of reliable research. Gathering as many responses as possible would create a diverse and broad collection of different answers.  To my surprise, I managed to gather 33 responses, which I consider a good amount. In this blog post, I will try to analyse my result and reach some conclusions from the responses of my target market.  These were my results: The first question was a demographic question to see how old are the respondents. The overwhelming majority (15 people) were of ages 16-20. However, I tried to send this form out to many age groups to gather as much information as possible.  Five people were of ages 21-26. Five people were of ages 27-32, 6 were 32-36 years old and only 2 people were above 36. No one was below 16 in my questionnaire.  I consider this a success as there is a variety of ages in my qu...

Process: Flow Chart

Image
Last term, I was very overwhelmed with the research. I did not have a specific plan that would help me complete the research. Therefore, this term, I decided to complete a flow chart.   This term, I am focusing on completing new things, therefore, I thought that it was appropriate to complete a flow chart to help myself be more organised.    According to Hebb (n.d.), a flow chart is: ' A flow chart is a graphical or symbolic representation of a process. Each step in the process is represented by a different symbol and contains a short description of the process step. The flow chart symbols are linked together with arrows showing the process flow direction.'. (Hebb, n.d.) This is my own flow chart made in PowerPoint: The start of this process is in a circular shape. A circular shape is used to signify the start and end of the process. The first step is to research the specific era corresponding to the lamp design. Once I sufficiently research that specific era, I will...

Research: Different Eras

Image
In my development mountain valley exercise, I concluded that I want to look into different eras in order to create evolutionary progress lamps.  In this blog post, I will be researching and concluding which five eras I want to continue with my research with. I will not go into great detail about these eras now as I am planning on closely examining them in future blog posts to see how I can relate them to my own designs.  Before proceeding with the research, I want to classify what evolutionary progress means to me. I will not be going into modern eras. I want to really focus on primitive eras in the past. This will make the collection look more cohesive and it will make more sense. These were the eras I found:  Early human ancestors painting a bison inside a cave during the Paleolithic Age, n.d. The first era I will be adding into my collection is the Stone Age. This era was the primary inspiration behind this project.   However, the stone era was divided into 3...

Primary research: Questionnaire Planning

Image
During our art portfolio class, we were introduced to primary and secondary research.  I am planning in the future to also create a blog post with primary research of me going around the city and taking pictures of different lamp, however, as of now I decided to create a questionnaire and send it out to people. My aim for this questionnaire: -To discover what interest the people. -To see if my designs would be successful in the market. I sent it out to many age groups in order to receive feedback from different age categories. I wanted to see the different opinions of different people. These questions would help me develop my project and understand what I need to do in the next weeks.  Primary research is always very important for designers.  This was my questionnaire: The first step was to customise my layout. I added the title 'Lamp designs' so that the respondent knows what this is about. I also added a picture of cavemen so that they can immediately connect it to the ...

Research: Collection of 5

Image
In my previous blog, I noted down different ideas for the direction of my project. The one I liked the most was to include a collection of 5 variations of the same product.  However, as I did not complete something like this in the past, I wanted to research it before starting to design it to ensure that this is the direction I want to pursue. Lighting  In my 'project development in the real world' post, I added a collection of 4 lamps. I was very intrigued by the different shapes and outcomes and wanted to explore it. As seen in the picture, there are endless possibilities regarding the functions of lamps. I have room to play with various aesthetics and also consider the style of it. Some styles I can add include desk lamps, ceiling lamps etc.  Having a collection of lamps would definitely be very beneficial as I have not explored it before in previous terms. I can consider different aesthetics and work with them. The Hay AAC family includes numerous dining chairs, swive...

Developing Ideas Exercise: The mountain valley

Image
During the previous term, we completed an in class task where we were required to develop our ideas using a specific method.  I tend to be very overwhelmed at the beginning of the term with the overflow of ideas and I noticed that this exercise was one of the most beneficial exercises for me. It helped me gather my thoughts on paper and also allowed me to further generate some more. I started noting down many ideas in previous blog posts, so I wanted to add my top ideas on this exercise.  This task is called the mountain valley:  where you look at your ideas and rank them from best to worst (top of the mountain to the bottom). This was my mountain: At the bottom of the mountain is the idea of including 5 products only related to the stone era. Even though my concept is inspired by that era, I would love to add a modern twist to this and create something more broad and unique which matches the modern aesthetics.  The next idea moving upwards was to create a collection...

Sketches based on my research

Image
Over the past few weeks, I have been researching various artists and designers in order to draw inspiration from them. On one of my tutors comments, he mentioned that it would be good to see some sketches inspired by the research done so far.  I think that is a brilliant idea as it may help me generate more ideas and develop my work.  These were some sketches I came up with: My Own Bali Primitif bench (n.d.)           root bench (n.d.) From the blog 'My Own Bali' research, I used these two elements and combined them together to form a table.  This was my outcome: Comments:  I think that adding the two elements together was a good decision. I took the bent design from the bench and combined it with the unevenness of the root bench to create a table that has two layers of storage. I tried to maintain the bulky design of the legs inspired by the second bench design.  I added some discolouration to the wood to show the natural texture it has...

Lecture: Francisco Goya

Image
During our previous lecture, we looked at Francisco Goya and some of his artworks. Before I comment on some of the artworks, I want to add a section for his biography. Biography: Goya was born on the 30th of March 1746 in Spain. Goya was very keen on creating contemporary pieces that showcase historical events.  He started studying in Zaragoza and then went to Madrid under the guidance of Francisco Bayeu. Goya ended up marrying Bayeu’s sister in 1773. Goya also worked for the Spain's royal family where he painted tapestry cartoons. His career launched in 1775 when he created the series of more than 60 cartoons. In 1780, he was elected a member of the royal academy of san Fernando. In 1792 he became completely deaf after suffering from malady. He dies on 16th April 1828.  These are some of the art pieces we looked at in class: Charles IV of Spain and His Family (1800) This was a painting of the royal family of Spain, when he was hired to work for them. The way Goya worked with ...
