Glossary of Terms

During our last class, we started exploring terminology in our field and how we can use it in our blogs in order to be more accurate and precise.

I will try and explore some new terminology in this blog that I was not aware of, as well as adding terms I already know. I will keep coming back to this blog post and editing it whenever I expand my vocabulary. 

Words:


Aesthetics/ Form: The looks of the item or product designing.

User requirements: What the user is seeking for in a product.

Function: How it works.

Performance requirements: what is expected from the product to do

Scale of production: how the products will be produced

Exploded views: images that show the relationship between the components.

Orthographic views: different perspectives of the product.

Sketches: rough or unfinished drawings.

Renderings: process of using software to create hyper realistic depictions of the product in different environments. 

Software: The medium used to design the products

Anthropometrics: Study measurements of humans.

Ergonomics: how efficient people are in their working environment. How comfortable they are using the product.

Assembly: Joining different parts together.

Backend: Later phrases of the design program, before the manufacturing.

CAD: Computer- Aided- Design, a software used for designing

CNC: Computer-numerical- control, the software used to produce prototypes for the product.

Engineering drawings: technical drawings that convey the symmetry and the measurements in designs. 

Finish: The surface treatment of a product. 

Ideation: Early stages of the designing process. Brainstorming.

Model: The physical form of the product on software.

Mood Board: Collection of images to help convey thoughts or ideas.

Prototype: One of the first models designed on software. It may take other forms or function. Originates from the Greek word 'proto- πρώτο'  which means first.

Quality Control: process where everything during production is reviewed in order to ensure that everything is running smoothly. 3D prototypes are also made during this stage.

Scale: Allows for large products to be scaled down.

STEP file: Computer file format which transfers 3D data

Material properties: The characteristics of materials.

Specifications: description of the design and materials used to make something. 

Development: The design evolution of a product.

Lifecycle: The lifespan of a product.


Conclusion: Exploring such terms is vital in order to sound professional and precise. I will continue adding to this blog in order to further expand my knowledge.
